Fifth Graders Examine Nonfiction Text Features

In the library today, fifth graders read a magazine article about the endangered orangutans.  The article contained many text features that can be used to help the reader better understand the information.  For example within the text we found:  diagrams, a map, text boxes with additional information, captions under photographs, subheadings, subtitles, boldfaced words, and pronounciation keys.  The information was formatted so the reader could understanding the cause and effect of the orangutan's habitat (rain forests) being cleared for lumber.

Next time you read nonfiction text, pay attention to the "helps" or features that provide more information about what you are reading, and help you retain the information.
