When I reread an article I had saved from a 2000 publication, I was reminded of the reason why I had saved the article written by reading guru Lucy Calkins entitled, "
Let the Words Work Their Magic". Ms. Calkins states "reading aloud is the single most important factor to help children become proficient, avid readers."
The students hear many, many books read-aloud during their school day in the classroom and in the library.
Please don't forget the importance of reading aloud at home too. When he was a student at Tanglewood, my son Jordan loved the comfort of reading aloud. He usually insisted that his dad read aloud to him because he "wanted to FEEL the words" as his dad's deep voice resonated in his chest while he held Jordan close to him.
Click the link on the title of the article (found above) and read why I have saved this article for 10 years.
I am committed to keep reading aloud to the students of Tanglewood! Are YOU willing to read aloud to your child at home?
"You may have tangible wealth untold;
Caskets of jewels and coffers of gold.
Richer than I you can never be -
I had a mother (or father) who read to me."
